Monterey Pop Fest Turns 40 With Double LP

Was it really forty years ago that our hippy parents donned bell-bottoms, flashed each other peace signs and swayed along to the sounds of the first ever rock and roll music festival? Well I'm not having an acid flashback, so it must mean that Razor And Tie (with a double-shot of help from Starbucks) is releasing Monterey International Pop Festival, a double disc chock-full of live tracks from the legendary 1967 California music fest. Available June 5, the songs in this collection mark Jimi Hendrix's first big gig in the states, the first major appearance of Janis Joplin, plus tunes from the Who, Otis Redding and two previously unreleased versions of Simon And Garfunkel's "Homeward Bound" and "The Sounds Of Silence."

"Listening to the CD and watching Pennebaker's documentary about the Festival, the vitality of this music comes back to you," says Michael Krumper, Senior V.P. of Marketing at Razor And Tie. "Radio has made some of the studio versions of these songs overfamiliar, so that you barely hear them when they are played on air, but the live performances remind you that before this music was 'classic rock'?it was groundbreaking."

The documentary Krumper speaks of, Monterey Pop was screened at this year's SXSW festival, and a retrospective doc is in the works over at VH1, who plan to air the flick on the MIPF anniversary, June 16.

"Personally, it made me look at some of these bands differently," Krumper adds. "I hadn't paid much attention to the Jefferson Airplane previously, but after listening to their performances at Monterey, they brought to mind Sonic Youth, Broken Social Scene and other collectives like them that have that kind of male/female vocal exchanges. Fans of music, indie rock and otherwise will make these kind of connections when they hear this CD."

The 26 tracks were hand-picked by music biz veteran Lou Adler, a co-organizer (along with Michelle and John Phillips of the Mamas And The Papas, producer Alan Pariser, and publicist Derek Taylor) of the summer of love fest.

Proceeds from the sale of the two-CD set will benefit the Monterey International Pop Festival Foundation and will be available at retail music stores. Or you can just pick one up along with your half-calf mocha chai tea at Starbucks, you free sprit, you.

B-Live hits The Custard Factory with Pendulum

Bacardi B-Live in association with Electricity are bringing a hot bed of contemporary music that will alight the clubbing masses of Birmingham this month. The Custard Factory, one of the Midlands? legendary clubs will see Australian drum and bass legends Pendulum on the B-Live decks alongside some of the world?s hottest DJs for 10 hours of musical mish-mash break beat bliss.

Pendulum shot to fame in 2005 with one of the biggest selling Drum and Bass albums of all time 'Hold Your Colour?. Pendulum?s unique sounding baselines and synthesized style led their remix of the generation defying 'Voodoo People? by Prodigy to peak at number 20 in the UK charts! Their huge beats and quirky remixes will tear up the dance floor and get the B-Live crowd pulsating to their unapologetic and raw drum and bass fresh fusion sounds.

DJ Yoda will be hitting the B-Live decks hard to bring his signature cartoon style to the clubbing masses of Birmingham. Collaborating the sounds of hip-hop, popular cultural and gaudy bad taste will leave the audience assured as to why he is considered the ultimate scratch master by industry insiders. His unique tape mixes led to Q magazine featuring him in their '10 DJs to see before you die? list. Joining DJ Yoda with a crossover sound will be Simian Mobile Disco. Their indie and dance fusion allows the crowd to experience the dynamics of rock whilst mentally twisting to the propulsive groove and mental acid fury of techno, leaving Birmingham?s Digbeth rocking to a beat never heard before.

Adding to this superstar line up, is the DJ dream team the Scratch Perverts with their award winning turbo-charged turn-tablist skills. They have been a strong influence behind the UK Drum and Bass scene for the past 11 years, attracting a large following of dedicated worshippers in the trail of their residency at Fabric, achieving multiple DMC titles and are now set to take Custard Factory by storm with their creative passion for bass. All in all a B-Live break-fest to make Birmingham proud.
