Beastie Boys thrill LA crowd with classic tracks

Beastie Boys rolled out old favourites and gave fans a taste of their new instrumental material at the second of three sold-out shows in Los Angeles last night (August 20).

Dressed sharply in shiny dark suits, sunglasses and fedoras, the New York trio worked the crowd at the Greek Theatre with their thumping beats and call-and-response raps.

"We played here last night, and tonight's crowd is kicking last night's crowd in the ass!" shouted Mike D, midway through their nearly two-hour set.

In addition to backing from Mix Master Mike on decks and Money Mark on keyboards, two percussionists added Latin and jazz rhythms to their sophisticated new material.

But it was the classics such as 'Brass Monkey' and 'Gratitude' that got the crowd roaring.

"This is the adult section of the show -- it's gonna get a little raunchy," said Ad-Rock before launching into 'Time To Get Ill', during which they sang a verse from MIA's 'Galang'.

A mixer malfunction left the Beastie Boys singing 'Intergalactic' a capella, and the crowd joined in until the mixer kicked back in for the final chorus.

Beastie Boys are set to play an all-instrumental show focusing on their new album, 'The Mix Up', at the Los Angeles Wiltern Theatre tonight (August 21).
Rock Asks Court to Determine Paternity Claim

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Chris Rock has asked a Georgia court to start paternity proceedings to determine if he's the father of a 13-year-old boy whose mother tried to file a paternity lawsuit against the actor and comedian last month.

Rock "desires to contribute to the support, maintenance, and education" of the boy if there's evidence to prove he's the father, according to papers that Rock's attorney filed Monday in Bulloch County Superior Court.

Kali Bowyer, who lives in Bulloch County, sought last month to file a paternity lawsuit against Rock seeking child support and medical coverage for her son, Jordan. She withdrew the lawsuit after court officials told her it was outside the southeast Georgia county's jurisdiction because Rock is a New Jersey resident. However, Rock, who has two young children with his wife of ten years, Malaak, is requesting that the matter be taken up in the Georgia court.

"She is looking forward to establishing that Mr. Rock is the father of their son and bringing the case to a swift conclusion," Brett Kimmel, Bowyer's attorney in New York, said Wednesday.

Kimmel declined to answer questions about what sort of relationship Bowyer claims to have had with Rock, or why she waited 13 years to seek a paternity claim. Bowyer told the Statesboro Herald last week that she and Rock "were friends and we spent time together."

Rock's attorney, John Mayoue of Atlanta, and his publicist, Leslie Sloane, did not immediately return telephone calls by The Associated Press seeking comment.

Rock recently directed and starred in the film "I Think I Love My Wife," and is behind the hit television series "Everybody Hates Chris," which is based on his childhood.
Arctic Monkeys close Old Trafford residency

Arctic Monkeys rounded off their second headlining show with another storming performance at Lancashire County Cricket Club tonight (July 29).

Although the band managed to escape the sound problems which affected their first show, the Sheffield four-piece had to stop the gig momentarily during 'Still Take You Home' when the crowd surged forward.

Singer Alex Turner announced to the crowd: "You're not going to believe this but can you all take a step back please?"

After a few minutes the band were able to carry on but then they had to stop briefly during 'Dancing Shoes' for the same reason.

Despite the minor crowd problems, their second show proved to be a triumph with much of the crowd belting out the words to a host of singles from their two albums including 'Fluorescent Adolescent', 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor', 'Brianstorm', 'When The Sun Goes Down' and debut album favourite 'Mardy Bum'.

In reference to the audience's participation, Turner quipped: "You're a lairy bunch you lot, lairier than yesterday apparently."

Later, the band were forced to stop midway through 'View From The Afternoon' because Turner was unable to contain his laughter when he spotted a member of the crowd dressed as the Bo Selecta caricature of Craig David.

"That is fucking freaking me out," Turner told the audience before he added: "Get the camera on that guy."

As the Sheffield four-piece brought their second show to a close the band played 'Fluorescent Adolescent' yet again before Turner took over keyboard duties for '505'.

Signing off with 'A Certain Romance' the singer added: "Thank you very much for coming. We should do this every year. We've had good weather, plenty of sunshine and good bands as well."
