Macy Gray covers Rod Stewart at Hollywood Bowl

Macy Gray covered Rod Stewart, Bob Marley and Deee-Lite during her performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles last night (August 26).

Running through several tracks from her latest album 'Big', she thrilled an 11,000-strong audience at the KCRW World Festival with an elaborate stage production and wardrobe changes that ranged from a disco-era white-and-red pantsuit to a sharp red suit replete with a ringmaster-style top hat.

Natalie Cole made a surprise appearance during Gray's first song, 'Finally Made Me Happy', but a rumoured duet with Justin Timberlake (who appears on Gray's latest album) never materialised.

"Ladies and gentemen, boys and girls, pimps and hos -- all you sexy people look especially beautiful when you shake your ass," she said.

In addition to playing old favourites, Gray paid tribute to Stewart by singing bits of 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' as well as Bob Marley with 'No Woman No Cry' and Deee-Lite with 'Groove Is In The Heart'.

Gray wrapped up her performance with her hit single 'I Try', which prompted a massive audience sing-along.

Earlier in the evening, Brazilian Girls delivered a strong set led by seductive, multilingual frontwoman Sabina Sciubba who strutted down the Bowl's catwalk in a revealing catsuit.

But it was Zap Mama's set that garnered the most audience participation, with the crowd members clapping and singing along to their Afro-pop, Latin-tinged rhythms.
Green Day to release single

The first single from the John Lennon cover album Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur, Green Day's "Working Class Hero," is set to hit iTunes tomorrow. The album, which features some of Lennon's original vocals, also includes Lennon covers by the likes of R.E.M., U2, Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguilera, Jack Johnson, Snow Patrol, Aerosmith, and Corinne Bailey Rae. The album is set for a full release in late May.

"It's wonderful that, through this campaign, music which is so familiar to many people of my era will now be embraced by a whole new generation," Lennon's widow Yoko Ono said in a statement. "John's music set out to inspire change and, in standing up for human rights, we really can make the world a better place."
Super Furry Animals 'blow up' Jersey Live soundsystem

Super Furry Animals played a sunny afternoon set at the Jersey Live festival today (September 2), "blowing up" the soundsystem after a particularly loud rendition of crowd favourite 'Receptacle For The Respectable'.

Prior to the "blow up", the band had performed tracks such as 'The Gateway Song' and 'Run-Away', from their new album, 'Hey Venus!', as well as older fan favourites. During opener 'Slow Life' lead singer/guitarist Gruff Rhys donned an enormous Power Rangers-style mask while he sang, and sent a text message at the same time.

But things were brought to an abrupt halt as the band finished playing 'Receptacle For The Respectable'. Rhys had been holding his guitar and rubbing it against guitarist Huw Bunford's guitar and bassist Gutos Pryce's bass guitar in a climactic end to the song, only for the power to suddenly fail.

Rhys attempted to speak to the crowd, but all power had failed and his microphone was inactive. The crowd cheered and the band walked off clapping their hands in appreciation. Most of the crowd thought the set was over as a result of the problem, but the band returned to the stage three minutes later, power restored.

"Sorry about that - we blew up the PA," said Rhys, before finished his band's set with 'God! Show Me Magic', 'Do Or Die' and 'The Man Don't Give A Fuck', before finally leaving the stage for good to rapturous applause.
