Arctic Monkeys lead Sheffield to victory at Benicassim
Arctic Monkeys stole the show on the second full day of Benicassim tonight (July 21).
Yorkshire's favourite sons attracted the biggest main stage crowd of the weekend as they notched up yet another festival victory, sandwiched between the unlikely combination of B-52's and Fischerspooner.
The band found themselves head-to-head with a different generation of Sheffield heroes in the form of The Human League, who played the Fiberfib.com stage directly before.
And despite telling a press conference earlier on that he "hates rock", Human League singer Phil Oakey was full of praise for his townsmen.
He told NME.COM: "They're not very flabby. I think they've got some interesting extra bits. They've got an element of French, sort of Jacques Brel influence, which we've never had in English music, which helps a lot. Especially if you're a Sheffielder, you know what they're on about."from Muse. |
Modest Mouse close Lollapalooza with crowd-pleasers
Modest Mouse gave the crowd just what they wanted as the sun set over the final day of Lollapalooza.
The band played a cornucopia of crowd-pleasers that kept audience members dancing, crowd surfing and tossing beach balls around throughout their set.
"How are you doing?" frontman Isaac Brock asked, and the audience roared back in response.
Clouds gathered and rain threatened, but it never materialised. "The sky has been gracious enough not to open up," Brock said.
Johnny Marr's impressive guitar work brought life to several songs from their recent album 'We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank', including 'Fire It Up' and the hit single 'Dashboard'.
"Johnny's part of the family now," Brock told NME.COM before their set. "He's in it for the long-haul."
Brock added that he was glad to be back in Chicago, where he used to live. "Tomorrow I'll roll around town and visit old haunts, including where I got my jaw broken a long time ago." |
Amy Winehouse cancels V Festival appearance
Amy Winehouse has pulled out of this weekend's V Festival (August 18 and 19).
Her record label issued a statement today (August 16) explaining that she will not play the festival and further touring committments are also in doubt.
"Amy Winehouse is putting all her touring commitments on hold until further notice in order to address her health issues," they explained. "Amy will not now be performing at this weekend's V Festival. Her family has requested that the media respect Amy's privacy at this time. There will be no further comment."
The news comes after Winehouse was admitted to the Causeway drug rehab centre in Essex on Tuesday (August 14) following a drug overdose last Tuesday (August 7). However, she left the clinic yesterday (August 15).
