Spiritualized close Summer Sundae with classics

Spiritualized brought the Summer Sundae festival to a close in Leicester tonight (August 12)

Band leader Jason Pierce was accompanied by a string quartet and trio of gospel backing singers, playing tracks including 'Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space', 'Broken Heart', and 'Lord Can You Hear Me', finishing with a cover of gospel standard 'O Happy Day'.

Pierce looked fit and healthy after recovering from a serious illness last year. He is back on the road while putting the finishing touches to a new album, due later this year.

Elsewhere, Gruff Rhys performed from his solo album inside an enormous faux-television, his set culminating in 20 minute epic ballad 'Skylon!'.

Blues legend Seasick Steve performed two gigs today to overflowing houses in side-tents, whilst The Pigeon Detectives got the Sunday crowd chanting along during a spirited and highly interactive performance from Matt Bowman.

Meanwhile, members of former John Peel favourites Cud, say they are 'ecstatic' with their Saturday gig, wherein the band were forced to call on members of the public to act as guest vocalists after lead singer Carl Puttnam was incapacitated at the last minute.
REM begin recording new album

REM have begun recording their new album in Vancouver.

As previously reported, the band have hired Bloc Party and Snow Patrol producer Jacknife Lee to work with them on the follow-up to 2004's 'Around The Sun'.

According to fansite murmurs.com, the band plan to spend a few weeks in the Canadian city before heading to Dublin to work on the rest of the record.

While in the Irish capital, REM will play five sold-out 'working rehearsal' dates at the Olympia Theatre on June 30 and July 1, 3, 4 and 5.

Frontman Michael Stipe said of the shows: "Returning to Dublin for our live rehearsal this summer provides the great start we need for our next albums work. I intend to hit the ground running."

Bassist Mike Mills added: "I've seen so many great shows at the Olympia, from The Waterboys to Lou Reed, and am thrilled to play at this wonderful venue, and in front of some of the best fans in the world, too."

There is no release date for the record as yet, but it is thought that a late 2007 release is likely.
Vampire Weekend reveal debut album details

Vampire Weekend have revealed details of their debut album, set for release in late January.

Speaking to NME.COM singer Ezra Koenig says that the as-yet untitled record was recorded in several locations, from apartments to barns with the most recent work carried out in a new studio called Tree Fort in Brooklyn.

"We recorded most of it ourselves in a couple of different locations" Koenig told us "In a friend's basement who had a good set up for recording drums....we did a lot of it in the band's apartments - usually Rostam and Chris's."

"There's even some stuff on the album that we recorded almost a year ago at our drummer's parents house in New Jersey, at this barn that they have, so they're really echoey drums."

Koenig also says that the band are readying two brand new tracks for the album.

"Some of the tracks we've had for a long time so we already knew how it was going to sound it was just a matter of tightening it up and remixing it a little, but we just recorded two new songs that we're really excited about called 'I Stand Corrected', the other is called 'M79'. Those recordings we're really psyched about."

The band are continuing to self-produce, with studio owners
Jeff Curtin and Shane Stoneback also contributing.

"Our producer is Rostam our keyboardist, and Jeff and Shane the guys who are running the studio are serving as engineers," says Koenig.

Currently gearing up for the release of their debut single 'Mansard Roof', the release will coincide with the band's UK tour set to commence in late-October before returning to the US for a tour kicking off in November.
