Phil Spector trial: Day 31

The Phil Spector murder trial resumed in Los Angeles today (July 9) with charged testimony from a witness for the prosecution following a 10-day holiday break.

Former New York City police officer Vincent Tannazzo took the stand and testified that he heard the music producer threaten women and use obscenities to describe how they deserved to die.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler had previously ruled that Tannazzo could not testify, but reversed his decision today, saying that his comments could be relevant to the case.

Tannazzo testified that he heard Spector make obscene comments about women at a party thrown by comedian Joan Rivers in the mid-1990s, reports the Los Angeles Times.

"They all deserve a bullet in their head," Tannazzo said Spector told him.

The former police officer was working as a security guard when he heard the producer make a similar comment at another Rivers party seven years ago. Tanazzo testified that Spector said, "I ought to put a bullet in her head right now."

Tannazzo added that he frisked Spector after a row between the producer and a woman, and found a handgun in Spector's belt.

The prosecution is arguing that Spector has a pattern of threatening women, especially when drunk, and that the murder of actress Lana Clarkson was an extreme example of this pattern.

Spector is accused of murdering Clarkson on February 3, 2003 at his Los Angeles mansion. The defence contends that the actress shot herself.

The producer arrived in court this morning sporting a new brown hairdo, a switch from his previously blonde locks.
The Game rejects plea deal

The Game rejected a Manhattan prosecutor's offer today (June 13) of a guilty plea for time already served.

The LA rapper, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, was arrested on charges of impersonating a police officer last year.

He allegedly told a taxi driver that he was an undercover officer and convinced him to run a series of red lights.

"Why should he plead guilty to bogus charges for a non-jail sentence if he's innocent," said the rapper's attorney, Jeffrey Lichtman, outside the courtoom.

"And he is innocent. It's rare that I have a 100 percent innocent defendant, but this is one."

A guilty plea could have ended the case against The Game, reports the Associated Press.

Lichtman said that charges were harrassment and a "new low" for the police. He added, "This case will end in a dismissal or an acquittal."

The Game also faces charges stemming from a Los Angeles incident in which he allegedly punched a man on an opposing basketball team and threatened him with a gun, as previously reported.
