Wilco cancel upcoming tour dates
Wilco have been forced to cancel two shows this week due to guitarist Nels Cline contracting the chicken pox.
The band were set to play tomorrow (August 14) in Duluth, Minnesota and in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Wednesday (15), but have announced the rescheduling of the Duluth show for September 4.
The Winnipeg show has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a date in 2008 that has yet to be determined.
In a posting on their website, the band wrote:
"We're sorry to report that our good friend and Wilco guitarist extraordinaire Nels Cline has recently contracted a rather nasty case of the CHICKEN POX (not sure that should be in all caps... but judging from the gruesome details in email correspondence we've had with NC, we'll leave it so).
"He is slowly on the mend but is not quite there yet, necessitating postponement of the Duluth, Minnesota show scheduled for this Tuesday night...the show scheduled for this Wednesday in Winnipeg, Manitoba has also been cancelled, and will be rescheduled for some time in 2008. Refunds will be available at point of purchase. We will post more details as they become available."
The remainder of the band's North American tour is set to go ahead as planned. |
Global CD sales slump in 2006
Global CD sales have slumped more last year than had been expected, according to an industry reports.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) said sales in 2006 dropped to 1.7bn, compared with 1.9bn in 2005.
Although digital music sales doubled last year, they failed to compensate for the overall fall in music sales.
IFPI chairman John Kennedy said he hoped the CD sales decline would have been offset by more increases in digital sales.
Kennedy told BBC News: "While digital sales have grown as expected, physical sales have fallen by more than expected.
"Unfortunately this trend has continued in 2007. Physical sales continues top drop at a faster pace than we hoped for, particularly in the US and now also in the UK."
However, Kennedy predicted that digital sales could grow by a further 50 per-cent this year.
Illegal downloads are not included in the figures but it is thought that there are 20 illegal downloads for every one legal download worldwide.
Kennedy insisted that "music is more popular than ever" but claims the recording industry is suffering because of piracy issues including CD copying.
Kennedy is calling on the government and internet service providers to help curb the spread of piracy and said the industry is investing "heavily" in consumer education and the enforcement of its rights. |
